Jose Vargas: "Undocumented Immigrant"
**Most of you will recall this week that Mr. Jose Vargas, a Pulitzer winning journalist with the Washington Post, revealed he is an "undocumented immigrant." You can read about his coming out party HERE. You can read his remarkable journey to this country and his trials and tribulations HERE. It is a triumphant of sorts that he won a Pulitzer for his reporting on the Virginia Tech shootings in 2008, but for all the wrong reasons.
Dear Mr. Jose Vargas,
You stated on your site, Define American, it is time for an honest debate in this country about immigration. Further, you stated there are approximately 11 million illegal aliens (well, you used "undocumented immigrants....I'll deal with that later). That estimate was used back in the early 80s when Ronald Reagan was President. It was later revealed that it was actually 3 million at that time. All 3 million were eventually granted amnesty by President Reagan by what he thought would be a one time deal and an end to illegal immigration to this nation. He later regretted that decision. Let's not quibble over estimates. I feel it is closer to 30 million illegal aliens in this country. But, let's meet in the middle at 20 million, shall we?
Let me also congratulate you on winning the Pulitzer. That is a great achievement for a journalist. However, let's examine the road you took to get there, Mr. Vargas. First, you were brought here by a man you thought was your uncle. As it turns out, he was a "coyote" from the Philippines. You were all of 12 years old at the time. From that time onward, you lied, you cheated, your grandparents obtained false documents for you to remain in this country illegally. These are words straight from your site, Mr. Vargas. You did not obtain a college education at taxpayer expense, according to your story on your site. I'll take your word at that. I still find it difficult to believe you did not have some sort of federal grant. But, we'll let that go for now. You stated you had obtained a scholarship to go to college to study journalism. You used false documents to obtain a drivers license, to obtain employment in this country, Mr. Vargas. Now, by coming out that you are an illegal alien, you want to make it your mission in life to help all illegals in this country.
You stated time and time again that you had great remorse by lying about and obtaining false documents in order to stay in this country, Mr. Vargas. You will have to excuse me if I tend to disbelieve your remorse. This country which enabled you to obtain an education, to obtain employment opportunities that you otherwise would never have had, you now show this country your gratitude by helping others like you? You now want to help the children of illegal aliens in this country obtain citizenship so they can now compete with 15-18 million unemployed Americans? Yes, let's discuss those unemployed Americans, Mr. Vargas. Let's discuss people who have paid taxes all their lives so illegals, such as you, who are able to have free access to medical, education and employment opportunities. Where is your "remorse" for these people, Mr. Vargas? Where is your "remorse" for the legal residents, the people who got in line and did things the right way? Does your infinite compassion extend to these people or is it just those who are illegally in the United States of America? A difficult question for you, Mr. Vargas. I don't expect you to answer. That would reveal the fallacy of your position on helping those illegally in this country.
Mr. Vargas, what American or legal resident did you deny a job during your life? What American student did you deny that scholarship which enabled you to start your journey of lies and deceit? Have you thought about those people at all, Mr. Vargas? How can you and other illegals like you expect Americans to have a honest debate on illegal immigration until you come to grips with the fact you break our laws? Every day you are here, you are breaking federal law. If Barack Obama wasn't President, you would have been arrested this week. As it stands, you are in good company with President Obama. He has no regard for laws in this country, just as he has no regard for the United States Constitution. So, it appears you are birds of a feather with our esteemed President. You may say you have not even had a speeding ticket since you illegally entered this country. But, if you got a speeding ticket, would you even acknowledge it? It appears that illegals only obey the laws that they deem necessary to keep them in this country. How about if I decided not to pay federal income taxes? I don't like that law. But, you know what would happen to me if I didn't pay, Mr,. Vargas? I would go straight to a federal penitentiary. I would be an illegal taxpaying American. In fact, put "illegal" in front of any word except "immigrant" and people on both sides of the political spectrum would probably be in agreement. Put illegal in front of "immigrant" or "alien" and people faint dead away in grief.
Do you feel, as La Raza apparently does, that the USA should be a borderless territory that anyone can come into and reap the benefits of living here? That is what this country is on the verge of becoming due to the huge influx of illegals in this country, Mr. Vargas. The starting point, of course, is the much beloved and defeated Dream Act that is like a curse upon this nation. It's not enough that the 15-18 million unemployed Americans have to contend with a dwindling pool of jobs. Now, people like you want to introduce about 3 million children of illegal aliens into that competition that so many unemployed Americans face daily. The Dream Act. Yes, that action that would give illegals a discount on instate tuition, a chance to keep their illegal parents in this country without fear of deportation and, of course, making them instantly eligible for social benefits that are in the process of going bankrupt. My question to the illegals in this country; once you have drained us dry of everything we have, where will you go? Now, that sounds like hyperbole to you, Mr. Vargas. But, if you keep up with the news, you know Medicare and Social Security are going broke, thanks in no small part to illegals taking advantage due to anchor babies.
So, now, you still want to help those 11 million or 20 million or even 30 million illegals on a path to citizenship, Mr. Vargas? You had a rough path to where you are now, Mr. Vargas. I give you that. But, your mother made that decision for you when she put you on that flight to this country. I have no sympathy for you. None sir. You could have done like so many legal residents have done countless times in this country. You could have done the right thing by going back to the Philippines and trying again as the lawyer advised. But, now you come out and wear your status of an illegal alien as if it were a badge of courage. You expect people to honor you as a result. Yes, I have seen the narcissistic dolts on Twitter and on other social sites praising you. But, like so many mindless liberals, they think with their emotions, not with their pea-sized brains. They see only one side of the story of illegal immigration in this country. I have not even touched on the environmental impact in the southwest or the "jobs that Americans won't do"fallacy that the open borders crowd likes to perpetuate. In fact, nothing I say here will make any difference to you, sir. You say it is time for honest debate on immigration. Honest debate to you and others like you is when someone agrees with your open borders positions. Until you can see both sides of the coin, your request for honest debate will be as dishonest as your using false social security cards and a drivers license in this country. In short, your request for honest debate on immigration is disingenuous at best.
If you are truly remorseful, Mr. Vargas, why not turn yourself in for using false documents at the state and federal level. That would prove you truly are trying to redeem yourself. But, let's take it a step further. If you are truly remorseful, you could go around the country and meet with the many unemployed Americans at state unemployment offices and apologize to them for your actions. If you are truly remorseful, go to campuses at universities and tell them what you did was wrong, deceitful and filled with lies. Go to your employer, who you obviously lied to on your job application and resign immediately. Finally, reject any rights to the Pulitzer you illegally won, Mr. Vargas. There is precedent for this happening before (seems it was at the Washington Post also). If you are truly remorseful, then and only then can there be honest debate on the immigration issue, Mr. Vargas. But, for now, your words for honest debate ring hollow.
I'm sure the lemmings on the Left will quickly rise to the occasion to defend you as vociferously and as crudely as they are so noted for doing. You made the comment on Twitter you did nothing heroic or brave. You stated you did what was right. I agree with you on the first part, Mr. Vargas. But, on the second part, you simply did nothing right. What difference is there between you and other illegals in this country? The difference is that you made the most of your illegal immigration status. The fact you stated you did what was "right" tells me that you are not a man with the integrity that others are so foolishly applauding. There can never be honest debate on immigration while you and others like you believe you did what was "right." You took advantage of this country. Define American, Mr. Vargas? The majority of Americans don't go out of their way to break the law every day of their lives in the USA. Your mere presence, along with 11, 20 or 30 million illegal aliens, is proof you have no respect for the law of this nation. You are not a hero. You are not brave. You are an opportunist. If you can live with that, then you should have no remorse when you go to help others (as you have already stated you will) like you in the future. But, you are not an American, Mr. Vargas. Not by any stretch of the definition you wish to use.
Sincerely,
David

The great thing about this all is you anti-immigration Americans are fighting a losing battle. Both sides of politics in America are beholden to a large Latin vote and within a generation or so these concerns will be irrelevant. Probably like the US.
The use of anchor baby was probably going a bit far. Birthright citizenship is one of the things that makes America great, and makes immigrants adopt their new nation as their children are American. Compare with 3rd generation Turks in France or Germany who are still marginalised and feel entirely detached from their place of reidence.
I realize Carter was not President material but I loved that man and I still do. He was as honest as the day was long and I think none going in really know what is what exactly and he had a congress fighting him too I believe didn't he? Presidents surely have advisers and apparently he didn't and how was it his fault we had a bunch of crappy helicopters, planes, whatever it was. I always really hated that for him because I am sure he cared and still does, for this country.
I guess I never said it here but yes, I ran out as fast as I could to vote for Obama because of Bush and Cheney, and I felt Cheney was running that show. Obama seemed so nice, so quiet, and I didn't realize until it was too late it was his only chance to get elected and I could not stand Palin!
This Mr Vargas, CAIRS, drug runners, Americans being killed, states not allowed to protect themselves, a woman from Texas told me they have a clinic set up just for illegal with TB and keeping it low key, and then all the other diseases from them and Asia illegals too, how can anyone possible bring us out of this?
Yes I do know that and why can't everyone see what he is. I have for the most part been a Democrat but I am not a blind one! I don't want to see my country destroyed and die for the sake of political idolatry. I really liked the first Bush but not his son but then I read they all are a part of something that has to do with the One World Government thing and voting for a third party is like giving a vote to Obama so I can only hope and pray there is a Republican out there they can round up who is not a crook or has a part in some secret agenda.
Well it may be getting off the subject somewhat but if you can I would like to know how Obama is getting by with rubbing elbows with terrorists such as this CAIRS guy, who got Franklin Graham disinvited on the prayer thing? Just every day I can't believe my eyes or ears, and if it was humanly or financially possible I would leave this country and I am quite sure most politicians will for sure, or to those glamorous underground mansions, like the one they had in WV years back. There are terrible times coming to us and so many just laugh it off, it astounds me they are such idiots. What more has to happen to open peoples eyes? Obama laughs in our face as we try to warn the idiots or try to get them to think about it!
One place they work I applied for at less than half what they are being paid a couple years back. And they get plenty of overtime.
The facts are no matter what anyone says, illegal is illegal and that is the way it has always been, now it is only true for the ones who have held this country together and supported illegals until there is no hope for tomorrow, OUR money is no more that WE put there for US. This government is suppose to be by and for the people, meaning citizens only, yet it is an ignorant joke..just like you.
I am sure that you all here can easily identify the "illegals" around you...
Having lived in Pensacola, and having spent a lot of time in Mobile, I know very well that your "problems" in Alabama are farcical..
Jefferson has been done no disservice....in fact, I think he would agree with me...
As opposed to coming and taking "American jobs"....for a large percentage, they have enabled the creation of jobs that otherwise would not have existed...
I reiterate, American immigration policy is a joke...
As long as you have money to grease the corrupted levers of power, one is not welcome.. Of course...that is the official line used by "conservatives"...and then we find that they are themselves exploiting these men, women, and children..
Knowing the adversity that the United States is facing, especially with the Baby Boom generation retiring and dying out, I realize that we need as many young men and women as we can get... As I say this I am thinking of the undocumented student from UCLA studying aerospace engineering... How few of them we have studying in our schools for use domestically, as opposed to gaining an education and returning to another nation...
Another friend of mine who was undocumented (she now has status) is finishing her nursing credential...
Polly, your statements are ludicrous... Please, point out some documentation to back up your claims...
Unless you have checked the immigration status of the people you are creating out of thin air, you have no clue who they are or where they come from...
Your birther tripe emphasizes the obviously ignorant world that you live in... How sad...

"MYTH #1. ILLEGAL ALIENS TAKE AMERICAN JOBS.
Not so. For the most part, illegal aliens work jobs Americans simply do not want. Those jobs include farm workers, janitors, chambermaids, busboys, dishwashers, gardeners, nannies and household domestics. Those are not the careers Americans seek. The jobs Mexicans perform in the U.S. are usually minimum wage with no benefits. They do the lousy, back-breaking work Americans can but refuse to do.
MYTH #4. ILLEGAL ALIENS DON’T CONTRIBUTE TO THE U.S. ECONOMY; THEY JUST COME HERE TO GET ON WELFARE.
Not even close. Illegal aliens contribute immensely to the U.S. economy. They work hard and perform the essential jobs that are vital to keeping the U.S. economy moving forward. They pay taxes and consume goods-from cars and gas to groceries and houses – and buy services which, in turn, benefits those U.S. citizens selling those goods and services.
As for illegal aliens signing up for welfare, U.S. law strictly prohibits those here illegally from obtaining welfare, food stamps or any other type of public assistance.
MYTH #6. ILLEGAL ALIENS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR A DISPROPORTIONATE PERCENTAGE OF CRIME.
Not true. Numerous reputable studies have shown that the problem of crime in the United States is not caused or even aggravated by immigrants, regardless of their legal status. Over the past few years, when someone is arrested the first question they are asked by the police after their name and address is, “Where were you born?” If the answer to that question is not “U.S.A.” the Border Patrol is automatically contacted and the person, if undocumented, is immediately placed into the deportation process. As a result, undocumented individuals have a very high incentive to not break the law."

"MYTH #3: The nation spends billions of dollars on welfare for undocumented immigrants.
FACTS: To the contrary, undocumented immigrants are not eligible to receive any “welfare” benefits and even legal immigrants are severely restricted in the benefits they can receive.
As the Congressional Research Service points out in a 2007 report, undocumented immigrants, who comprise nearly one-third of all immigrants in the country, are not eligible to receive public “welfare” benefits — ever.
Legal permanent residents (LPRs) must pay into the Social Security and Medicare systems for approximately 10 years
before they are eligible to receive benefits when they retire. In most cases, LPRs can not receive SSI, which is available only to U.S. citizens, and are not eligible for means-tested public benefits until 5 years after receiving their green cards.
A 2007 analysis of welfare data by researchers at the Urban Institute reveals that less than 1 percent of households headed by undocumented immigrants receive cash assistance for needy families, compared to 5 percent of households headed by native-born U.S. citizens.
A 2007 analysis of U.S. Census data by the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities makes clear that it is the U.S.-born, U.S.-citizen children of undocumented immigrants who are eligible for programs such as Medicaid and the State Children’s Health Insurance Program
(SCHIP). The analysis found that, between 1995 and 2005, the share of low-income, non- citizen immigrant children (either undocumented or legally present) who received Medicaid or SCHIP dropped from 36 percent to 30 percent."
There is much more to be said...and I probably will be saying it here in the near future...
It didn't make it in for some reason but I also asked has anyone noticed the clothing styles at Wal-mart? They know who has the money to spend so need to please.
Well I think if anyone would someone from Social Services could tell you illegals are getting medicaid, food stamps, medical and a check. I know it for a fact and I also know where they work while getting it and where they live in free housing. I can tell you citizens are having to cut back while illegals fill their buggies so high it take 2 or 3 to get it to their new Vehicles, dressed to kill with jewelery dangling. My small bag watching what I spend always cost $30, it boggles my mind to even guess what their purchase price was! Now I notice the children shopping and buying like there is no tomorrow. I also know there is much about their drug stuff the cops just turn away from. I don't know the whys and hows but I know it is happening and David is right it won't just be us to go down pretty soon...when it is all gone it is gone. Uncle Obama will just move back to Kenya when it is all over.
Mikelong,
You are wrong about the "no way to get financial aid bit" Illegals come here and use others social security numbers on a frightning level to obtain jobs, welfare etc. They also sneak accross the border by the thousands to have their babies for free "or tax payer expense" because our laws forbid us from turning them away! Call any hospital in DelRio or Elpaso Texas to confirm this! Citizens have rights , non citizens have should have NO rights untill they come here to become legal contribution Americans! The immigrants of today are far different than those who came here years ago! Those from years past kissed the ground and vowed to be Americans! ..........today they have no desire to better themselves but to HELP themselves to taxpayer funded entitlements!
Prior to composing the Declaration of Independence, Thomas Jefferson wrote the Rights of British America...
"Our ancestors... possessed a right, which nature has given to all men, of departing from the country in which chance, not choice, has placed them, of going in quest of new habitations, and of there establishing new societies, under such laws and regulations as, to them, shall seem most likely to promote public happiness." --Thomas Jefferson: Rights of British America, 1774. ME 1:185, Papers 1:121
The right to move from one state to another, from one place to another without limitation and molestation is considered an inalienable right....
While not mentioned directly in the Declaration of Independence....Jefferson did write "Man is endowed by his Creator with certain inalienable rights, among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness"...
"Among these"...
Your "feelings" about the number of undocumented immigrants are irrelevant...
There is no way for someone who is undocumented to get financial aid...
Mr. Vargas is a demonstration of the American Dream... He has found more success for himself than most legal Americans....
He didn't take an American's job...he earned his place...and a Pulitzer Prize...
"Shall we refuse the unhappy fugitives from distress that hospitality which the savages of the wilderness extended to our fathers arriving in this land? Shall oppressed humanity find no asylum on this globe? The Constitution, indeed, has wisely provided that for admission to certain offices of important trust a residence shall be required sufficient to develop character and design. But might not the general character and capabilities of a citizen be safely communicated to every one manifesting a bona fide purpose of embarking his life and fortunes permanently with us?" --Thomas Jefferson: 1st Annual Message, 1801. ME 3:338
"It [has] been the wise policy of these states to extend the protection of their laws to all those who should settle among them of whatever nation or religion they might be and to admit them to a participation of the benefits of civil and religious freedom, and... the benevolence of this practice as well as its salutary effects [has] rendered it worthy of being continued in future times." --Thomas Jefferson: Proclamation, 1781. Papers 4:505
"America is now, I think, the only country of tranquility and should be the asylum of all those who wish to avoid the scenes which have crushed our friends in [other lands]." --Thomas Jefferson to Mrs. Church, 1793. FE 6:289
"[We wish] but to consecrate a sanctuary for those whom the misrule of Europe may compel to seek happiness in other climes. This refuge, once known, will produce reaction on the happiness even of those who remain there by warning their task-masters that when the evils of Egyptian oppression become heavier than those of the abandonment of country, another Canaan is open where their subjects will be received as brothers and secured against like oppressions by a participation in the right of self-government." --Thomas Jefferson to George Flower, 1817. ME 15:141
There is far more to the immigration debate than the isolated issue that this Hub focuses on...
American immigration policy is broken, and is biased towards those with wealth over those who actually need assistance...
The DREAM Act needs to be revived and passed...and a realistic immigration policy needs to be created..
If businesses are required by law to pay employees (regardless of legal status) the same rates and to provide the same benefits under penalty of legal punishment, then the undocumented immigrant demand will wain...
As long as companies can hide their willful actions....as long as they can use immigration status to keep their employees locked in fear, then there will be no change...
Demonizing the undocumented is something else entirely....
I consider those who do this to be political cowards....for they only prey on the weak, as opposed to facing the companies and their paid politicians who have created and exacerbated the imbalances that drive the immigration to begin with...
Don't turn a blind eye to what your American bretheren are doing outside of your borders to drive people here...
Why do you ignore the "pull"/"push" dynamic that is taking place?
Instead of analyzing the problem, why do you choose to deride someone who, against all odds, has found success?
If only you showed the motivation to address the larger systemic problems that are transpiring right before your eyes...

One of the main reasons for the success of the American experiment is that we are a country of the "rule of law and not the rule of man". When someone is exalted and even encouraged to break the law because of some fuzzy idea of justice or any other reason, the foundation on which America rests is threatened!
As you stated in Mr. Jose Vargas is sincere in his regret for breaking our nations laws and disrespecting this country he sure isn't showing it!
