Open Letter to Mr. Jose Vargas

Matt,

To begin with, there are very few anti-immigration Americans. What there are, are anti- illegal immigration Americans. We have laws in America, just as I'm sure you do in Europe. When those laws are broken and ignored, you have a breakdown in society. Explain to me why America should not enforce its own immigration laws, and to protect our borders. Every country in the world does this. If the USA does it, then it is racist according to the holier-than-thou Europeans. Yes, there is a large Latin vote. But, eventually, they are going to have to respect all our laws, not just the ones they feel benefit them. I for one disagree with the generational theory that Latins will be the dominate population. To many variables to consider this far in advance.

Show me a developed country that automatically grants citizenship to those who come illegally across its borders. I'll give you the answer...the USA. But, the 14th amendment to the Constitution was not intended for this. It was intended for slaves at the time, not illegals steaming across our borders to take advantage of social services and the few jobs left in this country. You might want to read up a bit on our history before condemning us all as anti-immigration. We are anti-against those breaking our laws.

Inasmuch as I disliked W, I disliked John McCain even more. Therefore, I guess you could say my vote was a throwaway vote because I voted for the Constitutional Party candidate (I can't even remember his name now). But, voting for Obama was not an option. I personally thought he would be a liberal in the same mode of Jimmy Carter. Carter was a right-wing radical compared to Obama.

We have had two cases of TB in Alabama since January. TB was supposedly stamped out. Contrary to what mikelong says, our illegal immigration problem in Alabama is approaching the level of that of Georgia which has even more illegals than Arizona now. I don't know that those two TB cases were illegals. But, it wouldn't surprise me if it were. We have a right to enforce our borders, just as Mexico enforces their borders. You sneak into Mexico illegally, you spend two years in prison. I wish we had their immigration policy in place.

I never would have guessed in a million years you were a Democrat! Actually, I was a Democrat as a young man. But, then I matured, I grew up and got smarter. I didn't care for either Bush. But, as bad as they were, they weren't in the same league with Obama. Obama has an agenda. Some say he is determined to have the USA economy default so the American people COMPLETELY become dependent upon their federal government. That is what happened in the Soviet Union. Socialism has never worked. Obama has not figured that out yet.

Back to topic...I notice on Twitter that Jose Vargas answers everyone who praises him as "brave, and heroic." I was among the few (maybe the only one) who told him he was a criminal for what he did. He lied, cheated and provided false documents to stay in this country. Yet, he considers himself as much an American as you and I. He is American as those Mexicans cheering for Mexico in the soccer match against the USA Saturday. I'm tired of these people who reap the benefits of living here. But, diss our culture and our way of life. MR VARGAS, be a man and speak to someone who is criticizing you!!! Anyone that wants to get his attention, just praise him on Twitter at @joseiswriting, his twitter username. He will quickly respond to that. He is a COWARD, not a hero.

Polly, you know the IRS informed CAIR that they had lost their tax exempt status, right? CAIR spokesmen now are screaming discriminatuion despite other organizations losing their tax exempt status also.

Obama is the most dangerous president in American history. Not even Nixon, in his most insane moment, cast as long a shadow of danger to this country. I'll say this...if The Anointed One is reelected, turn out the lights. He will be unrestricted because he will not have to worry about a reelection. The real Obama will come shining through...the Obama that the socialists have been waiting for.

The funny thing about this whole "heroic, brave" coming out party by Jose Vargas; if Barack Obama isn't president, he would not dare acknowledge he is illegal. He is saying that he felt the it is "the right thing to do" now. BS on that. He came out now because he knows he has a friend in the White House. In fact, in the lead up to another vote on the Dream Act, I expect Obama to invite Jose Vargas to the White House for another photo op for passing an amnesty aka Dream Act.

Please tell me what the hell does it matter if illegal immigration is a problem in Mobile, Alabama or not? What does that have to do with the problem of illegal immigration in this country? The last time I checked, Alabama and Florida were both in the United States of America, not colonies of the Northern Republic of Mexico...last time, I checked that is. It is only a matter of time before illegal aliens come to Mobile to "bless us" with their presence. The largest steel mill (Thyssenkrupp) in the world is just now operating at 50% capacity. They are on the way...

You really need to do a little research on Jefferson. He was an anti-Federalist (later the Democratic Party). As such, he was a big believer in states rights. Jefferson would have supported Arizona's (and now Alabama) illegal immigrant enforcement bill.

I realize you will consider this anecdotal evidence (illegals taking American jobs), but do you recall what happened in George Bush's last year in office? ICE raided the Hormel Meat Packing Plant in Nebraska. I forget the exact number of illegals arrested. But, it was in the dozens for sure. You know what happened after that, Mike? The next day, job applicants were wrapped around the plant waiting for a chance at a job. I wonder how many would do the same today if only given a chance.

I am not going to address each one of your points in support of illegals being good for the economy. They have taken over construction, landscaping, and the service industries. At one time, Americans did those jobs. It is nonsensical to think illegals are not hurting Americans job-wise and social services as well. How many illegals do you think are in prison today due to crimes committed? How many have killed Americans, only to sneak back into Mexico to avoid capture? No, American immigration ENFORCEMENT is a joke. We have an immigration policy on the books after the Reagan Amnesty in the early 80s (that worked so well, didn't it?). Again, it is called the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986. We don't have a "broken immigration system." We have a broken immigration enforcement system perpetuated by both Bush presidents, Clinton and, of course, The Anointed One.

You come up with the same sad solutions as most liberals. In your subjective world, if you believe it strongly enough, then it must be true. If you believe illegals are hard working, contributors to society, obeying the law, outstanding non-citizens, then it must be true. If you would do just a cursory check of the facts, you would discover the complete fallacy of your argument.

I simply don't understand the logic of the open borders crowd. Every single country in the world considers it their sovereign right to enforce their borders...except one. At some point, logic dictates we can't take care of all the indigent in Latin America, China, The Philippines, and on and so on. We simply can't do it. I see you spend little time talking about border enforcement. That speaks volumes about not only your mindset, but the mindset of the one-world philosophy of progressives. At some point, the wrong people are going to come into this country (if they have not already). The people not supporting border enforcement are going to pay for this thoughtlessness, including the likes of the Hispanic Caucus in Congress. They want no border enforcement. We live in a world where people want to destroy this country. I thought 911 was our wakeup call. I can see, not only from your thoughts on illegal immigration, but the thoughts of "heroes" such as Jose Vargas, believe that border enforcement is discriminatory. Free for all of immigrants to come here for jobs and the benefits of living in this country.

Mike, take a few moments and speak to the 15-18 million unemployed Americans who you, along with Mr. Vargas, seem to ignore. Tell them how allowing MORE immigrants into the country will create more jobs. Tell them these immigrants will not take jobs intended for them. Tell them that a mass amnesty for 30 million illegals will not affect Social Security, Medicare or the education of their children. Tell them illegals are good for the economy. Tell them that a mass amnesty for illegals is also good for national security.

Take your time...I'm sure the American people, who have been searching for a good job for YEARS, are waiting on you.

Somehow, I don't think Thomas Jefferson was speaking directly to the question of what to do with 20-30 million illegal aliens "...moving from one place to another without limitation and molestation is considered an inalienable right...." I sincerely doubt Thomas Jefferson was referring to people who willfully broke federal law (of which he was a big advocate) by "moving" from one country to another country (the USA) illegally as an "inalienable right." Illegals have no more right to be in this country illegally than I do in Australia, Mexico, Russia or any other country that protects its borders. Here is another quote from a U.S. President:

"In the first place we should insist that the immigrant who comes here in 'good faith' becomes an American and assimilates himself to us, he shall be treated on an exact equity with everyone else, for it is an outrage to discriminate against any such man because of creed, or birthplace or origin. But this is predicated upon the man's becoming an American and nothing but an American. There can be no divided allegiance here. Any man who says he is an American but something else also, isn't an American at all. We have room for but one flag, the American flag, and this excludes the red flag which symbolizes all wars against liberty and civilization, just as much as it excludes any flag of a nation to which we are hostile. We have room for but one language here, and that is the English language...and we have room for but one sole loyalty and that is a loyalty to the American people." Theodore Roosevelt in a letter to the American Defense Society in 1919.

Two key words in that quote are "good faith." I think you can figure out why President Roosevelt put that disclaimer in there. He foresaw the day when illegal immigration would be a problem for America, something that Thomas Jefferson did not when making the quote above.

My feelings about illegal immigration are most definitely relevant since I am the one who created this hub.

There is no way someone illegally in this country can LEGALLY get financial aid. All one really needs is a social security number, as Mr. Vargas is acutely aware.

The American dream does not consist of cheating, lying, providing false documents to achieve your goals in life. If that is your idea of the American dream, than we have different definitions.

Mr. Vargas took jobs that other Americans, just as quailified, could have certainly have done. Could they have done it as well as Mr. Vargas? I suppose we will never know the answer to that question.

Your continued quotes from Jefferson make a mockery of the entire issue of illegal immigration. Jefferson had no idea that illegal immigration would be the enigmatic problem it is in the 21st century. You are living in the era of Ellis Island when unrestricted immigration was not a problem. Today, with our economy in shambles, jobs as scarce as ever before since the Great Depression, illegal immigration is a problem that affects every facet of American society. To continue to welcome those who illegally drain social services, who take jobs from Americans is beyond incredulous. It is absurd, sir.

American immigration policy is broken, I agree. But, the problem lies with not enforcing the immigration policy we have on the books (Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986 - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Immigration_Reform_an We are not in need of more workers in this country. We are in need of more jobs for American citizens and legal residents. That is what we need.

The DREAM Act benefits who? It gives instate tuition to children of people who broke the law, it gives them the right to hold their parents in this country without fear of deportation and the right to apply for social services on their own. Explain how the Dream Act is beneficial to Americans as a whole? I don't want an emotional response, but one based on fact, please. And, we finally agree on something....the illegal employers who exploit the illegal alien issue to their benefit. There should be MASSIVE penalties laid down for these companies. But, guess what? Your position is at odds with many of the open borders crowd.

Americans who buy drugs imported from Mexico are contributing to the destabilization of that country. I understand that. However, because of what a few do, should we then allow millions and millions of illegals into this country because of what some fools are doing? Why should we, as a nation, be made to suffer for the illegal drug dealings of some Americans? Do not fool yourself that illegal aliens are contributing to the drug problem as well. Bringing the illegal immigration issue up as a whole is not demonizing those that illegally cross our borders. I realize there are many facets of this issue. But, it is illegal aliens who are the face of the problem. Illegal immigration has to be stopped. It won't be stopped by the current resident in the Oval Office. He has his reasons for that, I'm sure.

My entire hub was not to "deride" Mr. Vargas. I saw the many people praising him on Twitter and he was eating it up. What was not said is what I stated in this hub. There are two sides to a coin, just as there are to illegal immigration. I presented the side that Mr. Vargas chose to ignore. The damage that illegal immigration is doing to this nation can not be understated. Mr. Vargas chose not to address this side of the debate. Therefore, I decided to write about it for him. He wanted honest debate on immigration, I gave it.

Since you are fond of quotes, I leave you with this one from a most respected African-American citizen:
